Ex-Lionhead Devs Launch Kickstarter
Developers from former Microsoft studio, Lionhead Studios have released a Kickstarter campaign for a new Fable video game called Fable Fortune; Is a Fable themed collectible card game (CCG) set in the world of Albion. Fable Fortune is a fable themed free-to-play CCG which features Co-op and PvP game modes. The game is planned to Launch on Steam & Windows Store at the completion of the £250,000 Kickstarter Campaign.
Fable Fortune began as a secret project at Lionhead Studios that was in production for 18 months, until Microsoft shut down the UK based studio. Immediately after, the long time Lionhead developers knew what needed to be done; And that was to form a new studio called, Flaming Fowl Studios. Next they just had to convince Microsoft to give them the Fable Fortune IP to continue development. They make it clear in their Kickstarter that Microsoft only granted use of the Fable Fortune IP and that Microsoft still owns the entire Fable franchise rights. And being a small independent studio they don't have the finances to complete the game; that's where the crowd funding comes in.
They could have easily had a large developer finance the game but they want to be "fully independent", and "make decisions based on the pride of our work, not because someone with a cheque book says so." You can't help but to have confidence in a developer when they say something like that. They have been developing the game alongside Mediatonic, which is also a UK indie developer with experience in CCG's.
Like all Fable predecessors, the card game takes place in Albion. And features a fantastic lore, morality system, and the humor aspect that Fable is known for. Fable Fortune features multiple locations from past games including, Fairfax Castle and Bowerstone Market. Their goal is £250,000 to have a closed PC Beta funded, with a £700,000 stretch-goal for a Xbox One version Beta. By the pledges for funding you give, they award you with a multitude of in-game items and if you pledge £5,000 you will receive a tour of the studio.
